The STAR Method: How UK Interviewers Score Your Answers
Competency-based interviews are the backbone of British hiring. Understanding how panels score STAR answers is the difference between a polite rejection and an offer.
If you interview with a UK corporate employer — a bank, the NHS, a FTSE 250 firm, a council — you will face competency-based questions. 'Tell me about a time you dealt with conflict.' 'Give an example of when you delivered under pressure.'
British interview panels score these answers against a rubric, usually 1 to 5, and they are trained to listen for one structure: STAR. Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Situation: one or two sentences of context. Where were you, what was at stake.
Task: what was specifically YOUR responsibility. Panels mark down answers that hide inside 'we'.
Action: the longest part. Three to four concrete steps YOU took, in order. Use 'I', not 'we'. UK interviewers are explicitly trained to probe vague answers here.
Result: a quantified outcome. 'Reduced processing time by 30%' beats 'it went well' every time. If you can, add one sentence on what you learned — British panels award marks for reflection.
The most common mistake we see from international candidates: spending 80% of the answer on background and 20% on action. Flip it. The panel scores the action.
In our 1-on-1 interview preparation sessions, we run a full simulated UK panel interview and mark your answers against the same rubrics used in British corporate hiring.
