The 2-Year Graduate Visa: Your Complete Timeline (Part 1)
The Graduate visa gives you two years to work in the UK without sponsorship — but the clock starts ticking the day it's granted. Here's how to plan every quarter of it.
The Graduate visa is the single biggest advantage international students have in the UK job market: two years (three for PhD graduates) to work at any skill level, for any employer, with no sponsorship required.
But two years disappears fast. Here is the timeline we give every RMS client.
Months 1–3: Get your documents UK-ready. Your CV, cover letter and LinkedIn must be in British format before the autumn graduate scheme deadlines (September–November). Most schemes open applications almost a full year early.
Months 3–9: Apply strategically. Graduate schemes first, then direct entry roles. Track every application. Employers can hire you on the Graduate visa without any cost or paperwork — say this explicitly in applications.
Months 9–18: Secure the role that can sponsor. The goal of your Graduate visa period is not just a job — it's a job with a licensed sponsor who will move you onto a Skilled Worker visa before your two years end.
Months 18–24: Switch. Skilled Worker applications take 3–8 weeks. Do not leave the switch to the final three months.
The students who fail on the Graduate visa are rarely the least talented — they're the ones who treated year one as a holiday from career planning. Start in month one.
